Sadly, his father died when he was a baby. In order to protect her two sons and allow her to continue working to support the family, his mother arranged for Roger and his older brother to move to Brampton Bryan to be cared for by some of her relatives. He arrived in the village at the age of about eighteen months, and stayed until the end of the Second World War. He returned to London afterwards, and has never lived in Brampton Bryan again, but still has happy memories of the village and strong connections with Herefordshire."
