Brampton Bryan

Dissolution of the Friendly Society — Distribution of £1200. The Brampton Bryan Friendly Society, which has been in existence for a couple of generations, was brought to a conclusion on Saturday last. For some years the society has shown signs of decay. It appears to have lost its interest to the neighbourhood and its members, although it has helped numbers, in times past, in periods of distress. At the last feast day (as was noted in this paper) it was determined to stop payments and make arrangements for winding up. The result is the accounts were prepared, monies called in, and a scale of payment arranged for distribution by the secretary Mr Dunkerton. The scale of distribution had respect to age and continuance in the society; and what had been received by individuals had to be deducted. The result was that, after paying expenses, upwards of 150 persons received dividends, amounting to £5 as a minimum and £8 2s 9d as the maximum. Circulars were issued to summon members to the Oxford Arms Inn, on Saturday, at 2:00 pm, to receive the dividends. The businessmen in the distribution were the Reverend Dr. Murray (Brampton Bryan), Mr. John Davies (Adley Moore) Mr Dunkerton (Brampton Bryan) and Mr Pritchard (Adforton)
